Bagdogra to Bhutan by road
Many travellers from India fly into Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal and drive to the border town of Phuentsholing. It is a scenic, affordable way in, and lets you see southern Bhutan on the way to Thimphu and Paro.

About 4–5 hours by road via Siliguri and Hasimara to Jaigaon, on the Indian side of the border.

Phuentsholing to Thimphu
A winding mountain road of about 165 km. Most itineraries spend the first night in Phuentsholing or drive on to Thimphu.

Indian nationals
No visa needed: an entry permit using a valid passport or voter ID card. The SDF for Indian nationals is Nu. 1,200 per night.

Bagdogra to Paro
Drukair also flies Bagdogra–Paro, about twice a week, if you prefer to skip the drive in one direction.

Driglam Namzha
Cultural etiquette for visitors
Bhutan has a traditional code of conduct called Driglam Namzha. Visitors are not expected to know it, but these simple habits are always appreciated. Your guide will brief you before each visit.
Please do
- Wear long sleeves and long trousers or skirts at dzongs, temples and festivals
- Remove hats and sunglasses inside temples, and shoes where asked
- Walk clockwise around chortens, temples and prayer wheels
- Ask before photographing people, especially monks and elders
- Accept food or tea with both hands; it is fine to politely decline a second helping
Please avoid
- Taking photos inside temples and dzong shrine rooms
- Touching statues, altars or butter-lamp offerings
- Pointing a finger at people or religious images; use an open hand
- Sitting with your feet pointing towards an altar or an elder
- Flying drones without special permission

Winter
December – February
Dry, bright and quiet. Punakha Drubchen and Tshechu (13–18 Feb 2027) and the cranes in Phobjikha.
Spring
March – May
Rhododendrons and clear days. Paro Tshechu (18–22 Mar 2027) is the highlight; book early.
Summer
June – August
Monsoon: green, fewer visitors and easier hotel availability. Some roads are slowed by rain.
Autumn
September – November
The clearest skies. Thimphu Tshechu (10–12 Oct 2027) and Bumthang’s festivals in November.

What is included in a Bhutan cultural tour?
Our cultural tours include certified hotels, a licensed guide, a private vehicle and driver, meals and monument entrance fees on your itinerary, visa handling and airport or border transfers. For international travellers the SDF and US$40 visa fee are shown separately on your quote.
How many days do I need for a cultural tour of Bhutan?
Six to seven days covers Paro, Thimphu and Punakha well. Ten to eleven days adds the Phobjikha Valley and Bumthang, the spiritual heart of the country.
How far is Bagdogra from the Bhutan border by road?
About 165 km to Phuentsholing, which takes around 4–5 hours via Siliguri and Hasimara. From Phuentsholing, Thimphu is another 5–6 hours by road.
What are the most romantic places in Bhutan for a honeymoon?
Punakha, the Phobjikha Valley, Paro and the Tiger’s Nest, Dochula Pass and the quiet Haa Valley. Couples with more time often add Bumthang.
What is the best time for a Bhutan cultural tour in 2027?
Spring (March–May) and autumn (late September–November) have the best weather and the biggest festivals, including Paro Tshechu on 18–22 March and Thimphu Tshechu on 10–12 October 2027. Winter is quieter and still very rewarding.
What should I wear when visiting dzongs and temples?
Clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, with long sleeves at dzongs. Remove hats inside. Visitors do not need to wear the kabney (ceremonial scarf); your guide wears one.
Is a cultural tour suitable for older travellers or children?
Yes. We pace each tour to the group. The Tiger’s Nest hike is the only demanding walk: most people take 4–6 hours for the round trip, and horses for part of the way up can be pre-booked.
Do Indian nationals need a visa for a Bhutan cultural tour?
No. Indian nationals need an entry permit, using a passport or voter ID card, and pay an SDF of Nu. 1,200 per night.
