Frequently Asked Questions
How far ahead should I plan a trip to Bhutan?
Six to twelve months is comfortable, especially for autumn and festival dates when the good hotels fill early. We can still put together a strong trip at six to eight weeks' notice, and occasionally faster if flights allow.
What does a Bhutan trip actually cost per day?
Most trips land around US$250 to US$350 per person per day all in, covering the Sustainable Development Fee, hotels, all meals, a licensed guide, a private vehicle and entry fees. We break every line out rather than quoting one blended number.
What is the Sustainable Development Fee and is it included?
It is Bhutan's tourism levy, US$100 per adult per night as of August 2026 for trips starting on or before 31 August 2027. Children aged six to twelve pay half and under-sixes are exempt. It is always shown as its own line on your quote. (Rate checked 25 August 2026.)
When is the best time to travel?
March to May and September to November give the clearest mountain views and the biggest festivals. December and January are cold but bright, quiet and cheaper. June to August is monsoon in the south, green and dramatic, with some flight delays.
How do I get to Bhutan?
By air into Paro with Drukair or Bhutan Airlines from Delhi, Kathmandu, Bangkok, Singapore, Dhaka, Kolkata, Guwahati or Bagdogra, or overland from India through Phuentsholing, Gelephu or Samdrup Jongkhar. Do I have to travel with a guide the whole time?
Outside Thimphu and Paro, yes, a licensed Bhutanese guide is required. In practice most travellers stop noticing the rule by day two, because the guide is the reason the trip works at all.
