Bhutan adventure travel

Wild, quiet and still mostly forest

Bhutan’s constitution requires at least 60% of the country to remain under forest, and its rivers, ridges and valleys see very few visitors. Adventure here is less about adrenaline and more about having remarkable places almost to yourself, with a local guide who knows them.

700+

Bird species

More than 700 species have been recorded, from black-necked cranes to rufous-necked hornbills.

29

White-bellied herons

Counted in Bhutan in RSPN’s 2025 survey, about half of the world’s remaining population.

60%

Minimum forest cover

Required by Bhutan’s constitution to be kept under forest for all time.

268 km

Tour of the Dragon

The one-day mountain-bike race from Bumthang to Thimphu, tentatively on 5 September 2027.

Bhutan birding tours

Bird watching in Bhutan

Bhutan spans subtropical forest near the Indian border to alpine meadows within a day’s drive, so a single birding tour can cover a remarkable range of species. March to May, when birds are breeding and singing, is the peak season; November to February brings black-necked cranes to Phobjikha.

Winter visitors from the Tibetan plateau, usually from late October to February.

Rufous-necked hornbill

A shy, brilliantly coloured pheasant, most vocal in spring.

Bhutan photography tours

Photographing Bhutan: what to know

Bhutan is extraordinary to photograph, but it is a living culture with a few clear rules. Our photography tour is planned around light, festivals and viewpoints, with a guide who explains what you can and cannot shoot.

Best light and seasons

Autumn (October–November) has the clearest mountain views; spring brings rhododendrons; winter mornings are crisp and blue.

Inside temples

Photography is usually not allowed inside temples, lhakhangs and dzong shrine rooms. Courtyards and exteriors are generally fine.

At festivals

Shoot from the edges, never step into the dance ground, and avoid flash. Arrive early for a good position.

People

Ask before photographing people up close, especially monks and elders. Most are happy to be asked.

Drones

Flying a drone needs special permission in advance. Without it, leave the drone at home.

Practical gear tips

Batteries drain fast in the cold at altitude, and power cuts can happen in rural areas. Carry spares and a power bank.

The rules behind each adventure

Each activity has its own permits and seasons. We arrange them, but it helps to know what to expect.

When is the best time for a birding tour in Bhutan?

March to May is the peak, when resident birds are breeding and most vocal. November to February is best for black-necked cranes in Phobjikha and Bumdeling.
Mainly along the Punatsangchhu river basin, where RSPN’s 2025 survey counted most of Bhutan’s 29 birds. Sightings are never guaranteed, so we plan time in the right habitat with experienced birding guides.
Outdoors and in dzong courtyards, generally yes. Photography is usually not allowed inside temples and shrine rooms, and drones need special permission.
Yes. Every angler needs a fishing permit, and non-Bhutanese anglers must fish with a certified fishing guide. High-end trout and mahseer waters are catch-and-release only, with single barbless hooks. A 2024 report put the tourist fee for golden mahseer fishing on the Sunkosh at Nu. 7,000 per day.
Roughly November to April, when river levels are safe. Rafting is usually not run during the monsoon.
Yes, on an organised tour with a licensed guide, a support vehicle and the necessary permits arranged in advance.
Yes. A licensed guide must accompany visitors throughout, and treks need a licensed trekking guide. Fishing also requires a certified fishing guide.
Our adventure tours start from USD 1,200 per person (6-day birding tour, based on five travellers). International travellers also pay the SDF of US$100 per night until 31 August 2027 and a US$40 visa fee.
